3.3 Scientific Facts in the Quran

This section presents passages that many Muslims interpret as consistent with later scientific observations.

It is important to be methodologically fair:

• Some connections are stronger than others.
• Some verses are interpretive and can be read in multiple ways.
• Scientific language and scriptural language serve different purposes.

The goal here is not to claim automatic “proof” from every verse, but to examine whether the cumulative pattern is meaningful.

Deep Ocean Waves

Scientists have documented internal ocean waves far below the surface, including large waves at density boundaries in deep water.

“We expected to find something at about 50m… but we were really excited when we got a result at 1,500 meters.” — Prof. Karen Heywood, University of East Anglia

NASA describes internal waves as waves that move inside a fluid, often at the boundary between layers of different density (NASA Science, Internal ocean waves).

“Internal waves are waves that travel within the interior of a fluid… at the boundary between layers of different density.”

The verse below is often read as compatible with layered darkness and waves in deep waters:

أَوْ كَظُلُمَاتٍ فِي بَحْرٍ لُّجِّيٍّ يَغْشَاهُ مَوْجٌ مِّن فَوْقِهِ مَوْجٌ مِّن فَوْقِهِ سَحَابٌ ۚ ظُلُمَاتٌ بَعْضُهَا فَوْقَ بَعْضٍ

"Or [they are] like darknesses within an unfathomable sea which is covered by waves, upon which are waves, over which are clouds, darknesses, some of them upon others. When one puts out his hand, he can hardly see it."

Surah An-Nur 24:40

Fingerprints as Unique Identifiers

Modern forensics treats fingerprints as highly individual identifiers. Some readers connect this with Quranic mention of fingertips in resurrection language.

أَيَحْسَبُ الْإِنسَانُ أَلَّن نَّجْمَعَ عِظَامَهُ ﴿٣﴾ بَلَىٰ قَادِرِينَ عَلَىٰ أَن نُّسَوِّيَ بَنَانَهُ ﴿٤﴾

"Does man think that We will not assemble his bones? Yes. We are able even to proportion his fingertips."

Surah Al-Qiyamah 75:3–4

The Expanding Universe

Modern cosmology confirms that the universe is expanding.

“The universe is getting bigger every second… the space between galaxies is stretching.” — NASA (2019), Hubble expansion

The following verse is commonly cited as consistent with that expansion:

وَالسَّمَاءَ بَنَيْنَاهَا بِأَيْدٍ وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ

"And the heaven We built it with creative power; and indeed, We who are steadily expanding it."

Surah Adh-Dhariyat 51:47

The Big Bang

Modern cosmology describes an early hot, dense state followed by cosmic expansion.

“The Big Bang is how astronomers explain the way the universe began. It is the idea that the universe began as just a single point, then expanded.” — NASA Space Place

This verse is often interpreted as describing an initial joined state and later separation:

أَوَلَمْ يَرَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا أَنَّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ كَانَتَا رَتْقًا فَفَتَقْنَاهُمَا وَجَعَلْنَا مِنَ الْمَاءِ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ حَيٍّ

"Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and We separated them and made from water every living thing?"

Surah Al-Anbiya 21:30

Mountains Have Deep Roots

Geology describes isostasy, where mountain ranges can have deep crustal roots.

“Mountains have deep roots extending into the mantle to maintain equilibrium.” — ScienceDirect topic: isostasy

The verse below is commonly cited in that discussion:

أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ الْأَرْضَ مِهَادًا ﴿٦﴾ وَالْجِبَالَ أَوْتَادًا ﴿٧﴾

"Have We not made the earth a resting place? And the mountains as pegs?"

Surah An-Naba 78:6–7

Two Seas and Boundaries

Oceanography describes boundaries between water masses that differ in salinity, temperature, and density.

“Ocean fronts are boundaries between water masses that differ in temperature, salinity, and density.” — NOAA

“Ocean fronts separate water masses with different densities and temperatures.” — NASA Earth Observatory, Ocean currents

The following verse is often interpreted in relation to such boundaries:

مَرَجَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ يَلْتَقِيَانِ ﴿١٩﴾ بَيْنَهُمَا بَرْزَخٌ لَّا يَبْغِيَانِ ﴿٢٠﴾

"He released the two seas, meeting side by side. Between them is a barrier so neither of them transgresses."

Surah Ar-Rahman 55:19–20

Methodological Note

A fair reader can hold one of at least three positions:

1. These correspondences are strong signs of revelation.
2. Some are meaningful while others are interpretive.
3. Most are post-hoc readings and not evidential.
